Last night, I ate my good-bye dinner with Qachile and her son, Motlatsi. That was my saddest good-bye so far. Then I dropped Kim at the airport this morning. She’s off to meet her husband in Jo’burg and then they’ll be going on to Kwazulu Natal for a week-long safari. Can you say jealous? But my flight leaves Maseru in just four days and I’ll be home in five!!!

It’s Kim’s birthday! I made her French Toast this morning and then Daniella and I took her out to Nando’s for lunch. But the huge amount of work we both had to do combined with the fact that she couldn’t receive any phone calls from parents, husband, or anyone else (for some unknown reason), just made it feel like it wasn’t her birthday.

Today marked the beginning of making follow-up calls to the workshop participants. Making calls in this country is always a huge amount of work. I can’t wait until I get home and I can make a phone call and have a whole conversation with a person and maybe even get some information from them without having a face-to-face meeting. I just don’t understand why people are so afraid of the phone.

And tonight I move in with Daniella! With my own bedroom and a bathroom with a SHOWER! I’m so psyched!

Daniella, Kim, Daan, Aggai, and I spent about an hour or so transferring Daniella’s belongings from Lancer’s to her new house. Her house is HUGE and I have my own room that I will start sleeping in tomorrow night!

And in honor of Aggai’s last weekend here, Kim, Daniella, and I took him and Reyana (no idea of spelling) to Mohale Dam. It was actually a pretty gloomy day and it got quite chilly as we moved higher. But the dam really is an amazing thing. In case you didn’t know, Lesotho’s biggest export is its water…a huge commodity for the much drier South Africa. And after enjoying the view for a while, we went for lunch at the nearby lodge. By the time we got back, it was nearly 5pm. But it was really a great day.

This is the weblog of Lauren Babich. As an employee at Boston University's School of Public Health, I work on several projects in Lesotho aimed at building the country's capacity to mount an effective response to HIV/AIDS. Here you can read the account of my adventures in Lesotho, which started as a student in January of 2004. Hope you enjoy!
